Blumarine's Contemporary Y2K Elegance

With a name inspired by the azure Italian sea, Blumarine instantly
transports us into its unique world, emulating that of a dreamlike, underwater universe. Founded in 1977 by Anna Molinari and Gianpaolo Tarabini in the Italian province of Modena, the brand’s current collection combines its Italian heritage with a more contemporary aesthetic. This in turn, blends indicative notions of the early 2000s, whereby cargo pants, bomber jackets and expressive denim can be seen. Here at Fabric of Society, we delve into the details of what Blumarine has to offer for the season ahead.
Since the end of 2019, creative director Nicola Brognano has been firmly placed at the brands helm. Having previously worked with the likes of Italian designer Giambattista Valli as well as launching the eponymous Brogano label in Milan, Nicola brings his ready-to-wear and Haute Couture experience to the brand. With strong notions of sensual femininity, Blumarine combines with it a sharp sense of rebellious nature resulting in a ready-to-wear collection filled with elegant silhouettes and contemporary designs that are both of-the-moment whilst simultaneously reminiscent of the ever-popular Y2K era.
This season delivers a dreamy, soft colour palette of baby pinks, mole grey and indigo blues. The sensual aspect of Brognano’s aesthetic is depicted by floaty silhouettes in the form of long-sleeved silk blouses and flowing, liquid-like trousers that drape to the floor, extending the silhouette effortlessly. The juxtaposition of a denim hemline contrasted by the fluid, pink silk trousers is a representation of Blumarine’s modern mermaid whereby romanticism meets playfulness. Continuing the variations of contemporary denim, we find a durable, straight-cut utility skirt with its expressive pocket detailing, designed to be worn with a softer comparison such as the cropped,
form-fitting baby pink cardigan.
The suggestion of tough, sharp concepts sitting alongside sensual, femininity is at the core of Blumarine’s focus. Cargo trousers play an important role in the collection; here we see low-slung cuts epitomising those easily identifiable mermaid references, falling into a loose, baggy form. Subsequently, the oversized bomber jacket with utility pocket detailing, makes for a style commanding outfit when paired together. Noughties style references continue on into the accessories, where we find crystal embellished logos on bubble-gum pink leather and eco-friendly faux fur handbags. Rhinestone logos complete the Y2K opulence created with exquisite Italian craftsmanship.
Blumarine’s just dropped collection is both commendable and wearable in equal measures. Easily adapted into any modern wardrobe, it's stylish, versatile separates will see you through to the next season with ease.
