Fabric of Society spent Fashion Month on the ground across all four fashion capitals, watching the collections, visiting showrooms and considering what will matter once the spectacle subsides. For Spring/Summer 2027, restraint has loosened its grip. Clothes are becoming more tactile, more expressive and, mercifully, rather more enjoyable to look at.
More Is More
Beading, brocade and elaborate surface decoration signalled a return to clothes that reward a closer look. At Chanel, metallic beading and embroidered tweed gave familiar house codes a more spirited finish. Des Phemmes, Alemais, Cecilie Bahnsen and ROTATE offer similarly persuasive ways to introduce texture, whether through a fully embellished dress or one beautifully detailed piece.
The Pencil Principle
After several seasons of volume, the pencil skirt has returned to restore a little discipline. Prada dedicated its entire collection to skirts, confirming the knee-length silhouette as one of SS27’s most important propositions. Vivienne Westwood adds subversion, Magda Butrym brings sensuality and Voranida sharpens the line with architectural precision. Office attire this is not.
Leather, Despite the Weather
Leather has declined its usual winter appointment. For spring, it appeared lighter, softer and more streamlined, with jackets replacing heavier outerwear as the finishing point of a look. Christopher Kane’s Mulberry debut made a particularly compelling case for paper-thin leather. ARMA, ROTATE and Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili continue the idea through polished jackets and strong, clean silhouettes.
Clearly Sheer
Transparency remains, but SS27 replaces overt exposure with intelligent layering. Sheer skirts, dresses and tops create movement while allowing the construction beneath to become part of the look. Cecilie Bahnsen makes the idea romantic, Voranida gives it structure and The Garment keeps it beautifully restrained.
The Shoulder Bag Returns
The capacious tote is being challenged by something neater. Shoulder bags sat close beneath the arm throughout Fashion Month, bringing a welcome sense of polish without requiring an entourage to carry them. Dragon Diffusion, NAGHEDI, OSOI and Marge Sherwood offer tactile, sculptural and quietly distinctive versions designed for daily use.
Tailoring, Reconsidered
The season’s tailoring feels less corporate and more curious. Proportions are relaxed, construction is softened and jackets are styled with unexpected layers rather than matching trousers. GANNI brings ease, Des Phemmes adds decoration and The Garment demonstrates the appeal of precision without severity.
