What did we notice most in Seoul? The food, frankly. Our buying team is leaving extremely well fed — and with a rather long list of things we want to wear next.
At Fabric of Society, finding what’s next is part of the job. Our growing roster of Seoul names — OSOI, MARGESHERWOOD, The Loom Atelier and Le 17 Septembre — reflects our ongoing search for designers doing something genuinely distinctive. And after a week of shows, appointments and some excellent street style, Seoul’s point of view feels particularly clear.
Forget excessive embellishment. Here, the interest lies in cut, construction and clever contradiction.
Suiting, Reconsidered
Seoul has been busy dismantling the suit. Asymmetric hems, shifted collars and exposed construction turned familiar tailoring slightly off-kilter — in the best possible way. Proportions were deliberately unexpected, making suiting feel younger, cooler and considerably less corporate. The lesson? A blazer needn’t mean business.
The Masculine/Feminine Question
Why choose? Menswear-inspired and utilitarian silhouettes came softened with peplums, frills, lace and draping. It’s this push and pull that made the strongest looks interesting: something structured against something delicate; practicality with a little frivolity. Very Seoul, and far more fun than committing entirely to either camp.
The Layering Game
The runway offered plenty of evidence, but Seoul’s streets really made the case. Sheer fabrics and lace met heavier cotton and denim; uneven panels wrapped around the body; unexpected layers created movement and dimension. Layering here isn’t simply practical — it’s part of the design.
Utility, But Make It Fashion
Pockets, hardware, exaggerated buttons and closures were everywhere, but usefulness wasn’t necessarily the priority. Utility details became decoration in their own right, bringing an industrial edge to otherwise feminine silhouettes.
The takeaway? Structure without severity, femininity without fuss and practicality with personality. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Seoul. Something tells us our Korean roster isn’t finished growing yet.
