How to make your knitwear a style statement

There’s a distinct difference between your standard winter outfit put together purely to keep out the chill and those outfits that do that… and so much more. They are stylish, effortless and exciting. A different approach to summer dressing, great winter style leans unapologetically into fabrics, contrast and layering. With new collections landing on site from the home of elegant and unexpected knitwear, Aya Muse, and super soft statement shapes from Dunst, Feng Chen Wang and Sporty & Rich, master the art of the winter knitwear now.

Embrace Neutrals

The appeal of a neutral knit is that it should fit effortlessly into your existing wardrobe, be that twinned with denim, cargo pants or a dress. But it shouldn’t be so adaptable that it becomes invisible. Play with tonal layering or choosing a shade that matches the bottom half – such as The Garment’s versatile Grey Como Mini V Sweater with a pair of tailored grey trousers or a grey pencil skirt, or Dunst’s Beige Cashmere Crewneck Sweater with a suede skirt and jacket for the full colour drenching effect. Need inspiration? Look to Aussie girl Margot Robbie who regularly matches her knit wear with the rest of her look for a considered yet casual outfit.

Play with Proportions

Whilst a classic fine knit will always have a place in our capsule wardrobe, try playing with size and shape for dramatic effect. “I’m loving chunky knits styled over standout occasion wear pieces”, explains Fabric of Society's Head of buying, Catriona Macleod. “Think a sequin skirt, from a brand like Rotate, for example (launching at FoS soon!), with a big, oversize textured knit wrapped around the shoulders or tied at the waist. The high/low contrast feels fresh and playful”. These are small fashion risks that will pay off and instantly elevate a look to effortlessly styled status.

Lean into Layering

What’s better than one piece of knitwear? Why two (or more) of course! Some of our favourite looks coming from the AW runways were focused on layered knitwear, and whether that be tonal or contrasting, it seemed knitwear was having its moment. The trick here is to mix up colour and positioning. Try a fine knit top layered under a cute, short-sleeved knit, with a further bold coloured knitted top or cardigan tied around the waist or the shoulders. Push up your sleeves to show some wrist and give the overall aesthetic a relaxed vibe. Avoid mixing too many oversized pieces, instead keep the silhouette neat and close to the body – you don’t want the finished look to seem bulky.

Think Outside The Box

‘Knitted’ doesn’t necessarily have to take you in the direction of the classic jumper or cardigan, and sometimes moving past the obvious adds that kick of style we're all after. “I’m really drawn to knitted sets this season” reveals Catriona, “they feel ultra-luxe but effortless, and they’re such an easy way to elevate everyday dressing whilst still being super comfy and warm (which is much needed in NYC right now!)”. Turn to Aya Muse and Blumarine for sophisticated matching separates that’ll keep out the chill. Or play with cut by wearing cropped knitwear to totally transform the classic winter silhouette, Feng Chen Wang’s blue cropped top is as vibrant and mood-boosting as it is stylish – playfully modernising even the most classic pair of denim jeans or a-line skirt.
